Of Soldiers and Tourists.

A former military servant describes it as follows: "When I came to the island of Vis in 1986, I saw (directly in the harbour) the large slogan painted with a thick layer of red paint (dating from the 40s): 'Long live the armed brotherhood of Serbs and Croats'. It seemed as if time had stopped in this place in the 40s. There was deathly silence – the young have gone to study in bigger places on the mainland, and what has remained is mainly older people, in a strange symbiosis with the army from the nearby barracks. Whenever a road needs to be paved or water pipes need to be built, the military is there. If a chess tournament is organized – the opponents will undoubtedly be soldiers and locals."1
